To Hypnotize an Unusual Patient
We need a healthy dose of skepticism in taking the news

The author, Larry Garrett, an experienced hypnotist was hired to hypnotize an unusual patient, Uday Hussein. The author describes a unique insight into Uday's psyche gained during multiple hypnosis sessions. Larry managed to earn the trust and respect of his powerful patient as well as the admiration of many influential people working for Uday Hussein. As a result, there was hardly anything off-limits for Larry during his two sojourns in Iraq in 2001. Larry was thus able to experience Baghdad in a way only few could, which is why his book is fascinating.
Among the author's many thought-provoking observations is how we tend to cling to prejudices and let the media reinforce them. Some people confidently express opinions on subjects they know next to nothing about. Usually, we are unable to verify information provided by the media, so, especially opinions.

The author describes hypnosis as a way to influence patients' subconscious behavior and thoughts. There are limits to what hypnotists can accomplish, but it is possible to gain insight into a patient's character and psychological vulnerabilities.
We find that Uday Hussein is capable of cruelty as well as acts of kindness and compassion. The author reveals Uday's vulnerabilities discovered during many hours of hypnosis. Uday's compassionate and generous side was revealed during Larry's second visit to Iraq the day before September 11 2001 terrorist attacks. The author felt devastated by the news of the attacks. His only wish was to get home as soon as possible. He felt somewhat surprised that all people he met in the hotel expressed sympathy and support in the wake of the attacks despite all the harm inflicted on Iraqis by the Americans during the first Gulf War in 1991. Also, Uday Hussein, the patient, generously offered to relieve Larry from his duties and began making arrangements for Larry to fly home.
The book also mentions Iraq's history spanning 9 thousand years which the author learned during his visit to Babylon, the cradle of modern civilization. The most recent events, namely the two Gulf Wars left Baghdad with deep scars that have not yet healed. The author wrote an entire chapter describing his visit to the Amiriya bomb shelter destroyed during the Gulf War of 1991. The countless charred remains of people preserved in the bomb shelter bring home the sheer horror of the war.
著者であるラリー・ギャレット氏は、熟練の催眠士として、稀代の患者ウダイ・フセインの催眠療法を行うこととなった。氏は催眠セッションを重ねることで知るに至った、ウダイの深層心理について語る。ラリーは、この強大な権力を持つ患者の信頼と尊敬を勝ち得ただけではなく、ウダイに仕える有力者たちからも一目置かれるようになった。このため、2001年に2度に渡って行われたイラク滞在の期間中、ラリーは通常は許されないような場所にもほぼ自由に出入りすることが可能となった。バグダッドにおける彼の体験の特殊さこそ、この本の魅力であるといえよう。
この本には色々な意味で考えさせられることが書かれているが、とりわけ重要な指摘は、我々がどれほど先入見に囚われており、また、それを増幅するメディアの影響がいかに大きいかということであろう。実際、ほとんど知らないことについて、自信満々に意見を表明する人々も多い。多くの場合、メディアが報じる情報を確かめることが出来ることは殆ど無いとすれば、ニュース、特に、事柄に対する評価を交えたニュースを読む場合は、ある程度の懐疑心を持つことが健全だと言えるだろう。
著者によると、催眠とは患者の潜在意識下での行為および思考に影響を与えるものだという。催眠によって成し得ることには限界があるとはいえ、患者の人格と精神的な弱さについて洞察を深めることは可能である。
ウダイ・フセインには、残酷な側面に加えて、親切で思いやり深い側面があることに、我々は気づかされる。著者は数時間に及ぶ催眠セッションを通じて、ウダイの心の奥底に隠された弱さがあることを見抜くに至る。特に、ウダイの思いやりと寛大さが明らかになったのは、2度目のイラク訪問時、テロ攻撃があった2001年9月11日だった。著者はこのニュースに打ちのめされ、すぐにアメリカに帰国することを望んだ。そんな時、ホテルに勤める人々が自分に対して深い同情を示したことに、著者は驚かされる。1991年の湾岸戦争で、イラクはアメリカによる激しい攻撃を受けたにも関わらず、である。ラリーの患者であるウダイ・フセインもまた、寛大にもラリーをその任務から解放し、アメリカに帰国させる手配を始めた。
この本では9000年にも及びイラクの歴史についても言及されている。イラクの歴史について、著者は文明の端緒ともいえるバビロンを訪問した時に学んだ。また、近年の出来事、特に2度に渡る湾岸戦争はバグダッドに深い傷を残し、その傷は未だ十分に癒されてはいない。著者は1つの章をまるまる割いて、アミリヤ防空壕について語っている。アミリヤは1991年の湾岸戦争時に攻撃を受けた防空壕である。そこに残された被害者たちの炭化した遺体の破片は、戦争の恐ろしさを痛感させるものである。

I agree with you that we need a healthy dose of skepticism especially in such an age of profusion of information. Maybe we need more communication to know and learn about each other. Thank you for reminding us of this.
